Job Purpose:  Power U requires a talented and enthusiastic individual to lead and help direct Power U’s organizing programming. This person would be responsible for implementing and overseeing the organization’s campaigns with the executive director while supervising and assisting other organizers in coordinating their day-to-day campaign-related tasks. This is a full-time position based in Miami, FL.

Ideal candidates should have previous organizing experience and be comfortable working with youth and other community members, and be committed to the values of racial, economic, and gender justice (see the Power U Principles of Unity on our website). They should also be familiar with the principles of reproductive justice.

Supervises: Currently Supervises 5 Organizers

Description of Duties:

Manage Base-Building  Planning, Implementation, and Tracking(40 %)

In order to ensure  youth and intergenerational organizers and their respective campaigns are running in coordination and connected with the broader organizational goals, the Organizing Director will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Co-facilitate campaign planning with the Executive Director and manage the implementation of organizing or campaign activities
  • Develop political education curriculum for members in coordination with Organizers to ensure programs/campaigns can reach agreed-upon metrics.
  • Maintain the DARCI for the Organizing Department and holds responsibility for organizing work plans and accountability systems for implementation of organizing plans.
    • Responsible for creating your own work plan and supporting work plan development of organizing staff, including holding organizing staff accountable to the goals of their work plans.
    • Utilize Every Action database to track members, lead turnout efforts, and coordinate external events.
  • Represent Power U in key alliances and coalitions at strategic conferences, gatherings, etc.
  • Synthesize  and document organizing work and outcomes in periodic reports for evaluation and building institutional memory
  • Build relationships with school administrators, Teachers, Parents, and Students
  • Stay abreast of current events and policy decisions that affect campaign strategy.

Staff Management and Leadership Development (40 %)

Power U invests heavily in the leadership development of its members and staff. The Organizing Director is responsible for the coaching and development of Power U’s full-time organizers.

  • Supervise five full-time organizing program/campaign staff, including regular check-ins for activity planning and feedback and annual performance planning and review.
  • Works with ED to assess and implement appropriate training for Organizers
  • Provide regular feedback to organizing staff and incorporate organizer feedback to strengthen management practices

Member Coordination (15%):

Successful organizing efforts are also dependent upon logistics, funding, and communications. The Organizing Director will lead efforts that ensure logistics, outreach, and relationship maintenance happen with other support staff

  • Works with organizing staff to ensure members are current with their annual dues

Help coordinate member participation in funder relationship activities

  • Prepping members periodically for conversations with funders

  • Demonstrated Commitment to social justice; including knowledge of school-to-prison pipeline issues and economic, racial, and reproductive justice issues;
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in grassroots organizing to address social justice issues, human rights, or structural racism;
  • An effective communicator: verbal and written – able to articulate messages around social justice policy, human rights, and needs to strengthen campaign impact. A diplomatic communicator, negotiator, and conflict resolver who can build support, rapport, and positive outcomes when needed for organizing success.
  • Able to analyze and strategize the best path forward given socio-political, environmental, and economic contexts, with a strong project management focus to ensure progress toward organizing goals. While policy experience is not required for this position, it is an excellent skill to have that will support the role.
  • A capable networker and relationship-builder, with particular preference given to those with experience working with students, parents, and teachers.
  • A motivated leader holds a strategic vision and can identify and develop leadership skills among staff and members through coaching and mentorship.
  • This position requires a willingness to work irregular hours and travel;
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish or Haitian Kreyol is a plus.

Salary and Benefits:

This position comes with a salary of 72,000 per year with 24 paid vacation days, and 8 days of sick leave, additionally, Power U is closed for rest and rejuvenation after the Campaign organizing cycle for 3 weeks in late September.
