Jews United for Justice (JUFJ), along with our sister 501(c)4 organization, the JUFJ Campaign Fund, is seeking an experienced, full-time DC Director to join our organizing team.

The DC Director is responsible for the oversight, management, and effectiveness of the DC team. This includes supervision of organizing staff, goal setting, strategy development, campaign selection and execution, leadership development, decision making, coalition and external relations, and ensuring that the team is working smoothly and effectively. The DC Director additionally serves as Legislative Director for the Under 3 DC campaign. Internally, the DC Director is also responsible for partnering with other directors and senior staff to identify opportunities for cross-organization collaboration, learning, and problem-solving, as well as to identify needs or issues of concern among their team and across the organization. The DC Director also represents JUFJ’s core values and applies a racial equity lens to all of JUFJ’s work. This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Director of Organizing and currently manages 2 direct reports and an Avodah Corps Member.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
DC Organizing Team Management: Ensure the overall effectiveness, alignment, and coordination of the DC organizing team in order to advance the DC team’s goals and JUFJ’s organizational goals and strategic plan.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Organizing and the DC organizing team to set annual team and individual goals
    Create and implement systems for effective communication, planning, accountability, learning, and reflection among the DC organizers and leaders in order to accomplish individual, team, and organizational goals
  • Serve as staff liaison with the DC Leadership Council
    Identify and implement professional development and leadership development opportunities for staff and leaders
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Organizing and operations staff on the onboarding, training, and offboarding of DC organizing staff

Campaign and Program Management: Advance JUFJ’s organizing and programmatic goals in DC, as well as JUFJ’s overall organizational goals and strategic plan.

  • Lead the overall work of JUFJ in DC, including setting DC’s organizing and programmatic goals in collaboration with the Director of Organizing
  • Ensure that JUFJ is a key player in coalitions that are advancing real, concrete, progressive change in people’s lives
  • Oversee campaign selection processes
  • Oversee strategy development and decision making on campaign and coalition work
  • Serve as Legislative Director for the Under 3 DC campaign
  • Ensure that the DC organizing team is building power through base building and community building, as well as by recruiting, educating, developing, and managing a pipeline of leaders

External Relationship Management:

  • Hold primary relationships with key DC coalitions and coalition partners or manage other DC staff to hold those relationships. When appropriate, this may include active leadership or management of external coalitions.
  • Hold primary relationships with DC elected officials, as well as key organizations, congregations, and other partner relationships. Manage other DC staff to hold these relationships when appropriate.

Cross-organizational Collaboration: Represent the DC organizing team across the organization and collaborate with other departments to strengthen the organization as a whole

  • Serve as a key member of the management team, partnering with other directors and senior staff to identify opportunities for cross-organization collaboration, learning, and problem-solving, as well as to identify needs or issues of concern among their team and across the organization.
  • Oversee the implementation of JUFJ’s internal racial equity goals for the DC organizing team
  • Work with Communications team to ensure accurate content and consistent JUFJ tone and messaging in all externally-facing DC-related communications
  • Work with Development team as needed, for example to provide and ensure accuracy of content and tone for grant proposals and reports, identify grant needs and opportunities, and build and maintain relationships with funders
  • As needed, ensure that the DC team is represented on cross-organizational teams and planning efforts

JUFJ Campaign Fund (JUFJCF) in DC: Ensure the overall effectiveness, alignment, and coordination of the JUFJ Campaign Fund in DC in order to advance the Campaign Fund’s goals

  • Serve as DC Director of the JUFJCF
  • In election years, oversee candidate endorsement process, scorecard and voter guide development, and field support for candidates, as well as voter outreach, public education, and field operations/voter turnout to support JUFJCF candidates
  • Ensure regular meetings with Councilmembers
  • Work with the Development department to raise money to fund the JUFJCF’s DC work
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications department to maintain the website and produce materials such as voter guides and scorecards

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Significant Organizing Experience: At least 5 years of professional organizing experience (community organizing, labor organizing,, field organizing for a political campaign, etc.), with a preference for candidates with a diversity of organizing experiences to draw on
  • Management Experience: At least 2 years of management experience, with a preference for candidates who have supervised organizers
  • Coalition Experience: Experience and expertise working with and navigating the complexities of multiracial, cross-class coalitions
  • Campaign Strategy: Experience and expertise developing and implementing campaign strategy and managing strategic campaigns
  • Education and Training Experience: Experience facilitating organizing skills and leadership development trainings and some experience coordinating or facilitating anti-oppression trainings. An orientation toward consistently integrating learning and reflection into your work and the work of your team.
  • Political Experience: The ability to master a complicated political landscape quickly and thoroughly and use that information to guide complex strategic decisions to advance a campaign and/or achieve larger organizational goals. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with DC’s political landscape and changemaking groups
  • Building Relationships: Proven success developing trusting and collaborative relationships with co-workers, volunteer leaders and community members, elected officials, coalition partners, and other stakeholders
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, listening, and conflict management skills. The ideal candidate will communicate effectively and with curiosity, directness, and kindness.
  • Leadership Skills: A demonstrated ability to connect with, motivate, and mobilize other people, from staff up and down the org chart to volunteer leaders and community partners
  • Team Player: You enjoy working with people and leading a team to achieve its goals by helping people feel heard and empowered. You view your own work as supporting the whole, and integral to the team’s effectiveness. You build understanding around the processes you manage, and the team trusts that these processes maximize the work. You have a sense of humor, low ego, and a genuine commitment to working in a collaborative team setting.
  • Attention to Detail: Demonstrated commitment to meeting high standards in a fast-paced environment, and a history of managing a significant volume of work and getting things done without sacrificing quality, even in the face of obstacles
  • Technology: You enjoy (or don’t mind) working with technology and have the  appetite and aptitude to learn more about Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Asana, and EveryAction (NGP VAN).
  • Aligned Values: Demonstrated commitment to integrity, honesty, and positivity. Familiarity with Jewish cultural norms and navigating Jewish institutions.

LOGISTICS

  • Compensation: $75,000-85,000 per year commensurate with experience
  • Benefits: JUFJ offers a competitive benefits package covering 100% of employee medical & dental insurance premiums, 25% of premiums for employee dependents, employer 401k retirement contributions, short-term disability income protection insurance, pre-tax public transportation benefits, and generous paid time off, including paid family and medical leave.
  • Location: This is a full-time position based out of JUFJ’s Washington, DC office. In order to ensure the safety of our staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, all JUFJ staff members are currently working remotely and holding limited in-person outdoor meetings.
