Fight for Your Rights to Connect and Communicate

Free Press works tirelessly for equitable access to technology, diverse and independent ownership of media platforms, and journalism that holds leaders accountable and tells people what’s actually happening in their communities. We’re fiesty, supportive and racial justice-oriented.

The California campaign organizer will anchor Free Press’ state-based organizing, network building and policymaking efforts to fight hate and disinformation online. This work will involve pressuring major tech companies like Meta, Twitter and Google, as well as fighting to ensure Californians have a say in state and federal policies that impact local journalism and digital civil rights.

The starting salary is $62,000-$67,000, depending on experience.  To counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, we use a non negotiable salary system for all new employees.

Generous benefits include group medical insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, employer paid retirement benefits, health-reimbursement accounts, paid family leave, and a cell phone stipend. Annual paid time off is a total of nine weeks, including vacation, health-care leave and holidays.

Covid-19 Vaccination: All Free Press employees must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus or have an approved medical or religious/ethical/moral accommodation.

We are actively seeking to build a diverse and inclusive team with a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and skills.  We know groups subjected to systemic oppression– including people of color, women, people from working class backgrounds, and people who identify as LGBTQ+ – are less likely to apply unless and until they meet every requirement for a job. If you know of folks who meet some of the qualifications in the job postings, we’d love to have them apply or reach out for more information.
