Skills and Interests: The Faculty Association of Monmouth University (FAMCO) seeks a part-time independent contractor with excellent skills in community organizing and an interest in supporting a small faculty union undergoing a shift from business model unionism to social justice unionism. The best candidates will demonstrate strong skills in conducting 1-1 conversations, power analyses, member education sessions, and developing and managing contract campaigns. At least three years of labor organizing experience and experience in academic labor movements is preferred. Candidates with less experience who have an enthusiasm to learn will also be considered. Candidates who are knowledgeable about New Jersey labor politics are especially encouraged to apply.
Expected Outcomes: Specific outcomes expected over the course of the 18-month assignment include: completion of 1-1 office visits with membership; union density increase to 90%; a rebuild of the department liaison structure; liaisons trained in 1-1s, including inoculation; execution of 3-4 visioning sessions with membership to educate faculty on logic of unionism; the recruitment and training of 5 contract action team members; the design and supervision of successor contract campaign, including development of escalation of tactics, a media campaign, and the successful recruitment of member engagement; assistance building an executive committee leadership bench with 5 viable members identified for recruitment.
About FAMCO: The Faculty Association at Monmouth University is a collective bargaining chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and Local 6277 of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). First chartered in 1971, FAMCO represents approximately 290 full-time faculty at Monmouth University, a private four-year institution located on the Jersey Shore.
