REPORTS TO:           Staff Director and/or the President
 
POSITION SUMMARY:
 
The staff representative works with the leadership of Bargaining Unit(s), develops new and existing leaders, assists leaders and members with internal organizational efforts, political/electoral activities, contract negotiations and contract administration.  The staff representative helps build an effective organizational structure for the Union both at the Local and Bargaining Unit level.
 
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
1.                  Coordinate contract enforcement from internal organizing through grievance arbitration for assigned Bargaining Unit(s).
 
a.       manages grievance and arbitration processes;
b.      helps recruit and trains stewards and  insures steward’s effectiveness;
c.       upholds all standards of union around contract enforcement
 
2.         Develop, implement and evaluate member-centered contract campaigns for assigned Bargaining Units.
 
a.       Develop a well orchestrated and strategically sound contract campaign involving internal, external and community targets;
b.      Lead, facilitate, and coordinate the bargaining team;
c.       Performs all specified duties and upholds union standards around contract campaign
 
3.         Develops worksite based communication, leadership and representational structures.
 
4.         Assists worksite leaders and Union activists at assigned Bargaining Units to develop skills including group processes, grievance handling, bargaining and political activity.
 
5.         Participates in new organizing efforts of health care workers to strategically augment         current collective bargaining agreements (as time permits).
 
6.         Participate in and help lead political action activities.
            .
7.         Builds effective union power and worker leadership in worksites, as assigned, with limited bargaining rights under new collective bargaining law.
 
8.         Complies with detailed tasks as outlined in full job description and meets performance objectives developed with supervisor.
 
 
 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
 
§  Commitment to membership empowerment;
§  Creative and innovative ideas on problem solving, willingness to attempt new approaches to internal organizing, bargaining, and grievance handling;
§  Good, effective communication skills: oral and written;
§  Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
§  Ability to analyze and interpret complex union contract language;
§  Ability to effectively and efficiently manage numerous complex tasks in short period of time;
§  Ability to gain the respect of and motivate a professional, well-educated membership;
§  Computer proficiency, ability to learn contract costing;
§  Community organizing, coalition building, labor union experience;
§  Ability to function and work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, stressful environment;
§  Physical ability to walk, sit or stand for long periods of time as well as lift and carry boxes and other medium to small items;
§  Ability to work weekends, evenings and nights as needed and assigned
§  Ability to drive a car, travel long distances and overnights;
§  Maintain vehicle liability insurance.
 
 PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

§  Knowledge and/or experience in organizing, bargaining, representation, and/or arbitration;
§  Knowledge and/or experience in the organizing model of servicing;
§  Knowledge and/or experience servicing large (500+) bargaining units;
§  Knowledge and/or experience bargaining and/or organizing when opposed by union busters preferred;
§  Health care background or experience;
§  Relevant professional and/or educational degrees.
