WE ACT for Environmental Justice is a Northern Manhattan community-based organization whose mission is to build healthy communities by assuring that people of color and/or low-income participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices. WE ACT for Environmental Justice has had a 23-year history of effectively organizing with residents in Harlem and Washington Heights to create cleaner air by reducing diesel pollution that contributes to asthma and other respiratory illnesses, reduce indoor environmental health hazards such as lead poisoning, and compelling the MTA to build greener bus depots in Harlem and Washington Heights. We have been able to accomplish these victories by organizing community residents, working with researchers to understand key community problems, advocating for policy and legislative change with residents and filing lawsuits when all else fails. WE ACT is seeking a part time community organizaer and outreach coordinator to work on our affordable transit campaign. He/she will be responsible for: Recruiting residents on the buses and subways to be a part of of our new campaign, Transit Riders Action Council (TRAC) Organizing community trainings and town halls on transportation issues. Assisting with outreach to key stakeholders to gain their support for our transportation campaigns. It will be a part time consultant/contractor position. The paywill be $12/hour at 28 hours per week.
Skills and Abilities:
Fluency in English and Spanish both written and verbal. Knowledge of Microsoft word processing, publisher, spreadsheet, power point and data-base software. Excellent listening, presentation, and facilitation skills needed. Candidates must be able to perform basic research and should have strong interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Applicants should have at least 1 year organizing experience in a related field; labor organizing, neighborhood organizing, immigration, human rights, or community development. 2. An ideal candidate must be a self-starter and an effective team player. 3. Applicants should be able to participate in a team to develop goals, strategies, and actions. 4. A successful candidate must embrace diversity and see community residents as the advocates as WE ACT works with them to build a healthy community

Trainings
The Midwest Academy advances movements for progressive social change by teaching strategic, rigorous, results-oriented approach to social action and organization building. The Academy provides training (introductory and advanced) and consulting, equipping organizers, leaders, and their organizations to think and act strategically to win justice for all.
