Communications Specialist

Position Description:
- Develop and implement communications strategies for various campaigns
- Develop message and frame for campaigns
- Prepare and train spokespeople for media and other campaign events
- Plan and execute media events
- Place stories in mainstream, independent and ethnic media
- Write press releases, pitch letters and other media-friendly materials
- Create internal and external materials for campaign teams, including talking points and fact sheets
- Utilize new and emerging media for all aspects of communications work
- Update and maintain media database
- Design graphic materials including reports, pamphlets, brochures, flyers, PowerPoint presentations, etc. (a plus, not required)
Qualifications
· Undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and/or at least 3-5 years relevant experience; advanced training may substitute for some experience
· Experience in media relations, including writing media materials
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic communications campaigns, craft messages and execute tactics
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Knowledge of new and emerging media
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to anticipate needs and plan accordingly, coordinate complex activities, prioritize conflicting demands and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Strong, demonstrated commitment to the needs and concerns of working families.
- Bilingual (written and conversational) in Spanish preferred
- Knowledge/experience with any of these items is a plus: Web page design with HTML and/or Dreamweaver, website content management, Microsoft Publisher, graphic design with Adobe Creative Suite and/or Photoshop
