Cleveland Lead Organizer
The Organization:
Ohio Communities United is a new and growing progressive grassroots community organization committed to building power for low and moderate income people, predominantly in Cleveland and Columbus. OCU is organizing to preserve the gains won with the historic healthcare legislation; bringing together parents to ensure quality public schools; and fighting for quality living wage jobs.
At OCU, we work to ensure that everyone has access to the American Dream by amplifying the voices of low- and moderate-income communities, communities of color, and immigrant Americans though collective action. We develop the capacities essential to hold government and corporations accountable, improve the health of our families, economy and environment, and reform our public schools, workplaces and financial institutions.
OCU is a new organization with tremendous potential. It is a partner of the Leadership Center for the Common Good, a national training and support center for community organizations based in Washington, DC.
The Position:
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Building powerful local, state, or national (from Ohio, working with organizations in other states) issue campaigns;
- Building new, powerful community organizations in priority communities;
- Supervise, train and direct work of other organizers;
- Research and develop potential organizing campaigns;
- Build coalitions and relationships with key community, political and labor leaders;
- Fundraising;
- Organizational development including leadership development, organizer training with the goal of building self-sufficient community organizations or labor unions.
Qualifications:
- Three to five years experience in community, labor, or grassroots electoral organizing;
- Success at running issue-based, union/community organizing and/or political campaigns;
- Experience training and supervising community or labor organizers;
- Preference for excellent writing and communications skills;
- Ability to work with a large and diverse cross-section of members and allies.

Trainings
The Midwest Academy advances movements for progressive social change by teaching strategic, rigorous, results-oriented approach to social action and organization building. The Academy provides training (introductory and advanced) and consulting, equipping organizers, leaders, and their organizations to think and act strategically to win justice for all.
