New York Civic Engagement Table (NYCET) builds power with communities of color, immigrants, poor and working people to tackle racial and economic inequality in New York. Collaborating with a diverse group of social justice and service-based organizations, we produce lifelong voters, develop leaders, and win concrete changes in people’s lives. The Data Director is responsible for managing NYCET’s data and training infrastructure to support partner organizations in taking a data-driven approach to their civic engagement work. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with administering VAN and NYCET’s suite of digital tools, as well as working directly with partner staff to build capacity in integrating those tools into their organizing efforts. The Data Director supervises two Data and Training Coordinators and the Training and Data Lead. The Data Director works at the direction of the Deputy Director.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Administer, troubleshoot, and maintain NYCET’s suite of tools including VAN, Spoke, ThruTalk and Reach.
  • Coach partners and NYCET staff on best practices for implementing tools used in phone, text, walk and relational programs.
  • Oversee Capacity and Data department which includes two Data &
  • Training Coordinators and the Training and Data Lead.
  • Identify opportunities to build and maintain the shared state and national data infrastructure necessary to support partner program work.
  • Respond to partner support requests such as creating targeted universes, uploading data and exporting reports.
  • Design and facilitate trainings on how to integrate data collection and analysis into organizing.
  • Conduct relevant analysis of partner data and run program efficacy experiments as requested by partners.
  • Create and maintain data visualizations for the use of NYCET staff and partners.
  • Research and pilot new tools to be used by partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • At least two previous cycles of data experience or at least two years in a data role at a progressive organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate technical instructions into easy-to-follow language for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience managing a team.
  • Experience administering VAN (Voter Activation Network)/VoteBuilder or other civic engagement platforms.
  • Experience administering voter contact tools, such as peer to peer texting, phone banking, or relational organizing platforms.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets skills.
  • Knowledge of data management (SQL, postgreSQL server management) and experience manipulating large datasets.
  • Familiarity with common direct voter contact methods and tactics.
  • Working knowledge of the structure of political and civic engagement campaigns.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, while maintaining a high level of detail orientation and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience working in diverse communities, particularly in communities of color.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity and record of success working with communities of color, women, low-income people, LGBTQIA individuals, and other historically marginalized communities. Commitment to approaching the work in an inclusive and empathetic way.
  • Experience designing and facilitating training is a plus.
  • Experience integrating tools and systems with each other. Familiarity with APIs, Parsons, or Zapier is a plus.
  • Knowledge of software for mapping (arcGIS, carto) and reporting (Sisense, Tableau) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods is a plus.
    Proficiency in python or R for data analysis is a plus.

COMPENSATION: Compensation is $75,000 – $80,000. Benefits for eligible New York Civic Engagement Table employees include but are not limited to: medical insurance, 401(k) savings plan with employer contribution, paid vacation, personal, sick, and parental leave.

Basis: Full-time, Salaried, Exempt

Location: Based in New York state and is currently remote with travel and in person meetings likely in the future.

Reports To: Deputy Director

Supervises: Data and Training Coordinators (2 FTE) and Training and Data Lead (1 FTE).
