Community Organizer

Reports to: Executive Director



ASE is seeking a Community Organizer to expand our Coalition for a Lakeside CBA and to help win a Community Benefits Agreement (a written agreement between the developer and the community)  for the southeast side.
ASE coordinates the Coalition for a Lakeside CBA, which is focused on making sure Lakeside Development benefits local residents, by addressing the overwhelming need for training, jobs, affordable housing, and educational partnerships in southeast Chicago. Lakeside Development covers more than twice the size of the Chicago Loop, and will take place over the next 30 years. The site will create over 139,000 jobs and 13,000 units of housing. Southeast Side residents have been advocating for a Community Benefits Agreement, which will ensure that development of the region does not lead to displacement of its current populations.


  • Perform outreach to schools, churches, non-profits, block clubs, and other organizations to expand Coalition
  • Coordinate meetings with stakeholders and decision-makers
  • Discuss local issues regarding the development with community members
  • Strategize with community residents, local organizations, and lead organizer regarding campaign
  • Other tasks and duties reasonably related to the job responsibilities
  • Prepare written reports, meeting summaries, related written materials as they pertain to the work


  • HS Diploma. Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience in community/union organizing or working on community issues, desirable
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish)
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to build relationships and engage community members.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Willingness to perform outreach, both to individuals and to groups, and speak in front of groups.
  • Share our commitment to social, racial, and economic justice, and increasing community leadership and involvement in local issues
  • Track record of working with diverse populations, especially African Americans and Latinos
  • A flexible schedule and ability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Cell phone and automobile (with valid U.S. driver’s license and auto insurance)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word

This position is available immediately.

Salar and benefits: Full-time salary, commensurate with experience. Health benefits, vacation, travel reimbursement
