2022 Co-Director transition

April 2022
Friends and Partners,

The Midwest Academy has been a leading center for teaching strategic organizing since its founding in 1973. We have had the good fortune of having Directors who have shared our values and worked tirelessly to build the movement and organizations for justice and democracy.

Jay Travis and Eric Zachary, who have been our co-directors since 2019, have been a terrific team helping to expand our reach and impact.  Now is a time for change. Jay has decided to transition from the position due to recent shifts in life commitments. We are excited that she will remain part of the Academy training team, and are so grateful for her incredible dedication. Even more importantly, the training participants are grateful for the experience she has provided them with in strategic campaign development, the critical importance of employing a racial justice lens in our work, and base building.

We are now looking for a co-director to join Eric to continue this vital work. As we begin the search, we recognize that this is an exciting opportunity for the right person and for the Midwest Academy. We all know there is so much at stake in this period of history. The need for strong, powerful, progressive organizations has never been greater. The next co-director will be able to continue to build on the excellent training we provide and help lead us into the future.

We encourage you to share the job description (found here) with your networks and communities, as we value your recommendations and leads. All application materials noted within the job post should be sent to Jobs@midwestacademy.com.

Thanks to all of you who have helped to build and support the Academy.

As the field of organizing evolves, the Academy is committed to changing as well, to build on our storied history to evolve in ways that best support the current organizing field. We’re confident that, with your help, we will find a new co-director with the values, commitment, experience and judgment to lead us forward, prepared for the challenges and promise of this new era.

In shared commitment to building the organizations and movement for justice and democracy,
Heather Booth
Chair
Midwest Academy Board
